Ten Pitfalls and how to avoid them

This document identifies common practice pitfalls in initial assessments of children living at home. It is published by the NSPCC and based upon research conducted by academics and managers in Children’s Services.

Many of the themes in the document reflect issues that have come up in Serious Case Reviews, for example – insufficient focus on the child and difficulties in engaging with parents or carers. The pitfalls identified also reflect some of the challenges practitioners face in Tameside. There are questions for managers and practitioners at the end of each pitfall, which could be useful in discussion and in guiding practice. The publication also has excellent references and links.
