Best practice in safeguarding children and young people is enhanced by the opportunity to reflect upon and learn from practice. Not all practitioners are formally supervised which is why Tameside Safeguarding Children Board have produced a "Safeguarding Supervision Framework" which underpins this course. This is a two-day course and all managers/supervisors/advisors involved in safeguarding work should attend.

Target Audience: Groups 4–8

Those staff with specialist responsibilities in safeguarding; Named and Designated Leads (including Safeguarding Leads in Schools); Operational Managers and Practice Supervisors; Strategic Managers with responsibility for safeguarding children and members of strategic boards.

Course Content

The content of this course reflected in above outcomes – drawing on national & local guidance and lessons from practice as well as research evidence. Some time is devoted in the course to looking at the issues identified by participants as being critical in safeguarding management and in considering and sharing the practice experience of participants to inform learning.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will:

  • Understand the role of the manager in safeguarding practice.
  • Be aware of messages from practice & research about effective safeguarding and the role of the manager.
  • Understand Risk Assessment and the Management of Risk.
  • Be familiar with multi-agency working that enhances safeguarding.
  • Be familiar with the TSCB Framework for Supervision in Safeguarding.
  • Be aware of some of the pitfalls in safeguarding practice.
  • Understand how to ensure the voice of the child is heard.
  • Be able to recognise and respond to resistance.
  • Have an understanding of conflict resolution and how to work together effectively as managers in safeguarding children.

TSCB minimum standards for basic single agency safeguarding children awareness raising training are designed to assure that relevant training across all agencies and services in Tameside is delivered to a consistently high standard. They will be utilised by the Learning Improvement and Activity Sub- Group to quality assure relevant training. It should be noted that basic single agency awareness training should not be utilised to negate the requirement for professionals or volunteers in Tameside, whose work brings them into with children and their families, from acquiring or refreshing their Multi-Agency safeguarding knowledge via TSCB’s Multi-Agency Training Offer.
